Goodman AC repair in San Diego typically costs between $175 and $765, and most jobs are completed in a single visit. We service every Goodman line still running in San Diego County – from early GSC and GSX units to current GSXC and GSXH models – as an independent Goodman service provider, not a manufacturer-authorized shop. That independence means we fix what’s actually wrong, not what a warranty flow chart tells us to replace. Call (619) 793-3598 for an honest diagnosis and a written price before any work begins.
This page is for San Diego homeowners whose Goodman isn’t cooling right. Maybe it short-cycles in August. Maybe it runs but won’t reach the setpoint. Maybe it made a sound like a spoon in a garbage disposal and now just sits there. You want to know what’s wrong, what it costs, and whether it’s worth fixing. That’s what we lay out below – specific to Goodman, specific to San Diego.
How Goodman Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
1. Capacitor Failure on GSX, GSXB, and GSC Series
The most common Goodman call we run in San Diego is a dead run capacitor. These cylindrical components sit inside the condenser and give the fan motor and compressor their starting jolt. On Goodman’s builder-grade GSX and GSC series from 2008 through about 2018, we replace more capacitors than any other part – often on units only five to seven years old. San Diego’s inland heat (think Santee, El Cajon, Escondido in August) accelerates the breakdown of the capacitor’s internal dielectric gel. We bench-test every capacitor with a meter, not just a visual “oh it’s swollen” check. If it’s weak – even if it hasn’t failed completely – we replace it with a 440-volt-rated part that out-specs the original.
2. Condenser Fan Motor Burnout – GSX14 and GSX16 Lines
Goodman’s GSX14 and GSX16 outdoor units ship with a single-speed fan motor that works hard in coastal air. Salt-laden wind off Point Loma or Imperial Beach isn’t gentle on motor windings. We see bearings dry out and the fan seize, which then over-amps and clips the breaker. The owner notices the outside unit humming but not spinning – or spinning slow. We stock direct-fit replacement motors for these lines, and on GSX16 and GSXC units where the ECM motor fails, we go with OEM-equivalent motors that preserve the unit’s specified efficiency. A universal motor fits; it also voids the performance curve. We don’t do that.
3. Refrigerant Restriction at the TXV/Evaporator on GSZ and GSXC Heat Pumps
Goodman’s mid-tier GSZ heat pumps and GSXC variable-speed units run a thermal expansion valve (TXV) at the evaporator coil – the indoor coil. These are supposed to regulate the flow of cooling fluid, but San Diego’s hard water and aging installs can leave a TXV that’s either fully restricted or hunting – constantly opening and closing, giving you uneven vent temperatures. We see this most on systems that have been topped off rather than properly diagnosed. When a unit is repeatedly low on charge, the compressor runs lean, overheats, and deposits carbon into the TXV screen. We recover, flush, replace the filter drier, and confirm superheat and subcooling at the outdoor unit. If a system needs refrigerant every spring, the problem is not the refrigerant – it’s the leak. We find the leak first.
4. Coil Corrosion on Goodman Coastal Installations
Goodman uses micro-channel aluminum coils on many post-2015 condensers, and while those shed heat well, they are thinner-walled than copper-and-aluminum coils. In San Diego neighborhoods within three or four miles of salt water – La Jolla, Ocean Beach, Coronado – we see condenser fins degrade faster than the national average. By year seven or eight, coil fins can be crumbling to the touch. If the coil isn’t leaking, a fin-straightening comb and a proper wash lowers head pressure and keeps the unit running. If it’s leaking, we quote a coil replacement against a new-unit price. The split matters, and we say it in writing.
5. Worn Contactors and Loose Lug Connections
Every Goodman with a piston metering system – most GSC and GSX units – carries a contactor that switches the high-voltage feed into the compressor. After thousands of cycles, the contactor’s points carbon-pit, and the motor draws uneven current. We find units drawing 55 amps at startup that should be drawing 32. This is the hidden killer of older Goodmans: it runs, but every start is shortening the compressor’s life. We check torque on all lugs, replace pitted contactors on sight, and on units where ants have built nests across the points (a very real San Diego problem in Lemon Grove and Spring Valley), we seal the cabinet penetrations after the repair. The ants return otherwise.

Our Goodman AC Repair Process
Tell me what it’s doing, and I’ll tell you what it needs – no guesswork, no upsell. That’s what Victor Mancini tells every homeowner, and that’s how a Goodman call runs end to end at Cold Harbour Heating and Air San Diego:
- 1
You call; a live person answers. No phone tree, all day, every day. You describe the symptom, and we set a firm arrival window that same day or next.
- 2
Diagnostics, in the order Goodman’s engineering suggests. We listen first, then measure: line voltage, compressor amp draw, run capacitor microfarads, refrigerant pressures, and temperature split across the coil. On a Goodman, the wiring is straightforward – which makes the diagnosis faster than on some luxury brands, but only if the tech respects the diagram.
- 3
Written price before any work starts. We hand you the number, not a hopeful range. The price on the repair ticket is the price on your invoice. No discoveries that suddenly double the job unless you authorize a second, separately priced repair.
- 4
Parts: OEM when it matters, quality aftermarket when it’s smarter. For warranty-comp, condenser coils, and ECM motors, we spec Goodman OEM parts. For capacitors, contactors, and fractional-horsepower motors, we often use aftermarket parts that meet or exceed the original spec – at a lower parts cost we pass through to you.
- 5
The repair, the test, the cleanup. We fix it, run the system through two full cycles, confirm superheat and subcooling, check amp draw again, and wipe down the cabinet. We show you the readings before we leave.
- 6
Written 365-day guarantee. The repair is on paper, covered for a full year. If it fails within 365 days, we come back and fix it at no charge. This is exactly what our Done Right Promise says, word for word.
What Goodman AC Repair Costs in San Diego
The honest range is $175 to $765. Most homeowners land between $225 and $450.
| Goodman Repair | San Diego Cost Range |
|---|---|
| Run capacitor replacement | $175 – $285 |
| Contactor replacement | $185 – $310 |
| Thermostat repair or wiring correction | $160 – $320 |
| Condenser fan motor replacement | $340 – $625 |
| Refrigerant recharge (after leak repair) | $280 – $480 |
| Compressor component repair (relay/overload) | $250 – $650 |
| Evaporator coil/TXV diagnosis and repair | $420 – $765 |

AfterWhy San Diego Homeowners Call Cold Harbour Heating and Air San Diego for Goodman Work
Half the calls we get for Goodman are second-opinion calls. A previous company told the homeowner the unit is too old, too cheaply made, “you should just replace it.” Then we show up, find a $38 capacitor had failed, and have the unit cooling again inside an hour. That pattern is why we exist. Victor grew up in the San Fernando Valley, trained through the HVAC/R program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and has spent two decades turning classroom diagrams into real repair work – much of it on Goodmans, from Clairemont Mesa apartments to Mission Valley commercial spaces. We carry quality stock for the Goodman lines still running in San Diego, and because our techs also service Carrier, Trane, and Lennox systems daily, we’re not brand-blinded. If a Goodman unit is worth repairing, we repair it, and we guarantee it in writing for 365 days. If it’s not, we tell you why.
Frequently Asked Questions
We can verify if your Goodman unit is under the manufacturer’s parts warranty and source those OEM parts for your repair where the warranty applies. We are an independent service provider, not a Goodman-authorized dealer, so warranty labor reimbursement flows differently – but the parts warranty on a failed compressor or coil is often worth thousands, and we’ll help you claim it. Call (619) 793-3598 and have your model and serial number ready.
Most cosmetic and consumable parts (capacitors, contactors, motors, thermostats, filter driers) are already on our trucks because they fit all the common Goodman lines we see daily. For less-common OEM parts – a specific GSXC control board, for example – we have local supply relationships throughout San Diego County and typically have the part in hand within one to three business days. Our install date is agreed before you approve the repair. Call (619) 793-3598 to confirm availability for your model.
That answer depends on two numbers and two conditions. The numbers: the repair cost, which we write out for you; and the unit’s run time, which the data plate tells us. The conditions: whether the unit is cooling well enough for your family right now, and whether it’s losing refrigerant or just straining against San Diego’s summer. A repair under $400 on a ten-year-old unit that’s been reliable is almost always worth doing. A compressor replacement on a fourteen-year-old unit might be better money put toward a new system. We’ll show you the math in writing and let you decide without pressure.
In most cases, yes. Our phone is answered by a live person around the clock, and we aim to get a technician to your home within the same day or the next morning. San Diego summers are no time to wait, especially when a bedroom faces west and the condenser won’t kick on. Call (619) 793-3598 and ask for Goodman service.
Capacitor failure, without question – followed closely by condenser fan motor burnout in coastal areas and contactor failure on older units that run short, frequent cycles. If your outside unit is humming and not spinning, that’s likely a capacitor. If it’s spinning but blowing warm air, that points elsewhere. Both are diagnose-and-fix visits, and both carry our written 365-day guarantee. Call (619) 793-3598 for a free estimate.
