Goodman Heat Pump Service: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

Goodman heat pump service in San Diego typically runs $175 to $765 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a capacitor, a defrost control board, a reversing valve, or a compressor contactor. We keep the most common Goodman parts stocked on our trucks, so most repairs don’t need a second visit. You’ll usually know something’s wrong when your unit runs but doesn’t heat or cool, short-cycles every few minutes, or makes a sound your Goodman never made before.

We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Goodman. But we work on their heat pumps every week from Clairemont Mesa to Chula Vista, and our technicians are trained on the full Goodman line, including the GSZ, GSZB, and GSX series. If you’ve got a Goodman heat pump acting up, you’ve probably got a failing part. Here’s how to figure out which one – and what it should cost to fix in San Diego.

Which Goodman Models This Applies To

This page covers heat pump service for the Goodman model families most common in San Diego: the GSZ14, GSZ16, and GSZB split heat pumps, plus newer GSX and GSXC lines. The outdoor unit’s model number is on a data plate on the back corner of the unit. It doesn’t just matter for parts matching – it matters for warranty. Goodman’s parts warranty depends on the serial number’s first four digits, and the compressor warranty is what you’re really protecting when you choose OEM Goodman parts over generic substitutes.

The OEM versus aftermarket decision matters more with Goodman than with some other brands. Goodman uses Copeland and LG compressors depending on the series and year, and the run capacitor specs are tighter than most generic caps are rated for. A no-name capacitor that’s off by 5 microfarads might run fine through a mild San Diego spring and fail hard in August. When matching a reversing valve, the model number suffix tells us the specific refrigerant – R-410A for most units installed since 2010, but we still see R-22 systems in older Clairemont and La Mesa homes. Putting an R-410A valve on an R-22 system is a costly mistake, and it’s the kind of thing that separates a trained Goodman tech from a generic handyman. We source OEM Goodman parts whenever possible, and when a quality aftermarket equivalent exists (capacitors, contactors, fan motors), we’ll tell you and let you choose.

Signs Your Goodman Heat Pump Service Is Failing

  • System runs constantly but won’t reach set temperature. This usually points to a failing run capacitor, which is the Goodman part that fails most often in San Diego because start-up load is higher here thanks to the salt air. The compressor can’t get up to speed, so it limps along without really cooling or heating.
  • Unit short-cycles: starts, stops, starts again within minutes. The compressor contactor pitting affects many Goodman units around San Diego’s coastal neighborhoods, where moist air accelerates contact erosion. The contactor chatters instead of holding, and the unit behaves like someone’s flipping a switch.
  • Heat pump blows cold air in heating mode. If the outdoor fan runs but you’re getting no heat, the reversing valve may be stuck. The defrost control board can also be the culprit – it tells the reversing valve when to shift. On Goodman units specifically, the defrost sensor and board are known weak points after year seven or eight.
  • Outdoor unit won’t turn on at all. Before anything else, check the breaker. But if the breaker’s fine, you’re likely looking at a dead capacitor or a failed contactor. On older Goodman heat pumps, we also see failed crankcase heater thermostats, which prevent the compressor from starting on cold San Diego mornings (yes, mild as they are, we get those damp 40-degree nights).
  • Buzzing or humming sound from the outdoor unit, but fan isn’t spinning. That’s the compressor trying to start against a failed capacitor. The internal overload eventually trips, and then you get silence and no cooling. Let it sit too long and you risk compressor damage – and a burned-out compressor replacement is a four-figure conversation, not a $275 one.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Goodman heat pump part replacement in San Diego runs $175 to $765 installed, parts and labor included. Where you land depends entirely on which part failed.

  • Run capacitor: $175 to $285. The most common repair on Goodman heat pumps in San Diego. We stock these on every truck.
  • Compressor contactor: $185 to $320. A 15-minute job, but the part quality matters. We use OEM-grade contactors with silver alloy contacts.
  • Defrost control board: $285 to $485. Requires removing the control panel, testing the sensor, and confirming the board is actually at fault before swapping it.
  • Fan motor replacement: $385 to $620. Goodman uses ECM motors in newer units; those run higher than the PSC motors in older systems.
  • Reversing valve: $545 to $765. This is a bigger job because it involves recovering refrigerant, replacing and brazing the valve, pulling a vacuum, and recharging. It’s not the kind of part you swap in 30 minutes.

Every repair includes the written price before work starts, the replacement part, labor, system testing, and a written guarantee that covers the repair for 365 days. If it fails inside that window, we come back and fix it at no charge. This is the Kingswell Way: say the price before the work, show up in the window given, leave the place cleaner than found, put the guarantee in writing, and come back if it fails.

DIY or Call Us?

You can check your breaker and your thermostat without touching a single tool, and there’s no shame in doing that first. But the moment you’re opening the outdoor unit’s access panel, you’re in danger territory. Goodman heat pumps carry 240 volts at the contactor and capacitor, and a capacitor holds a charge even after the power is off. A shocked hand on a Saturday morning isn’t worth the $200 you might save. If you see bulging capacitor tops, melted wire insulation, or a corroded contactor, that’s the sign to stop and call someone who does this daily.

The one thing you can safely do? Keep the outdoor coil clear. San Diego’s coastal fog drags salt-laden moisture into condenser fins, and combined with dust from dry inland air, it chokes airflow and makes every part work harder. Beyond that, let’s handle it. Call (619) 793-3598 and tell us what it’s doing – we’ll tell you what it needs, no guesswork, no upsell.
